Chapter Fifteen: New YEARS.
Happy Gregorian New Years! I realized today, as this is the first time I am a Baha'i celebrating New Years (we have a Baha'i calender with the New Year not being at this time of year), I thought about what a new year really is, and if it really has any real importance to our lives. I came to the conclusion that resolutions, and reflections, and having a "clean slate", are silly. You can come up with a resolution, everyday of every month. You can reflect on your mistakes and accomplishments, every night before bed. And a clean slate? Well, you can't erase your past no matter how hard you try. You can only learn from it, accept it, and let go graciously. This all takes me back to when I was in Iceland, and when I learned for the first time in my life that every single moment of every single day is a chance to feel new. A chance to be born again, a chance to strive and find that deep and inherent goodness inside each of our souls. Every single day, you make the choice. The choice to love your fellow humans on this Earth, the choice to love yourself. Nothing matters but this moment. This moment in time is all you need right now, all you have. Every second of every day is the chance to be born anew, and to begin to consciously make the choices that benefit yourself and others. Don't worry if it's January 1st or August 21st, it is a new moment, and a new moment is a blessing, and perfect in its very essence.
